Tips On Prepping Your Vehicle For Winter

With colder temperatures just around the corner, it is the perfect time to start thinking about getting ready for winter.

Along with winterizing your house, you also need to take steps to prepare your vehicle for winter weather. From icy roads and poor visibility to extremely cold temperatures, cars and trucks are subjected to extreme conditions during the winter season. Preparing for these conditions ahead of time will not only protect your vehicle but will also help you stay safe on the road.

Make Sure Your Tires Are In Good Shape

Having good tires on your vehicle is extremely important during the winter. If your tires are worn, they won’t grip the road as well, which can increase the chances of losing control on snowy or icy roads.

Verify that the tread depth is still adequate and that the tire pressure is within the recommended range. Don’t forget to check your spare tire to make sure it is in good shape, too.

If you live in a climate where icy roads are common, consider having snow tires put on your vehicle for the winter months. The extra expense may be worthwhile for the additional control that tires like these provide.

Wiper Blades And Washer Fluid

Wet winter roads and poor weather conditions can leave your windshield dirty or difficult to see out of.  To make matters worse, the City of Cincinnati loves to dump tons of salt on the roads during the winter resulting in a cake-like accumulation on your windshield.  To prevent visibility issues, make sure that your wiper blades are in good shape and properly seated in the wiper holster.

And since the weather can get quite cold in January and February, make sure you are using windshield washer fluid that is specifically designed for winter weather so that it doesn’t freeze when it comes in contact with your windshield.

Check Your Battery

Cold weather conditions can negatively affect your vehicle’s battery. To avoid problems, make sure that your battery is in good shape before winter sets in. Clean away any corrosion around the battery posts or cables.

Consider having your battery tested by a professional, as well, to make sure that it is still as strong as it should be. If necessary, replace it before winter begins. Don’t forget to keep a set of jumper cables in your car at all times, as well, in case your battery dies from the cold weather.

Put Together An Emergency Kit

Having emergency supplies available can make a real difference in your comfort and safety if something goes wrong while driving during the winter. Put together a kit that includes warm clothing like hats and gloves, emergency blankets, high-protein snacks, an emergency radio, a flashlight, a collapsible shovel, and a cell phone.

Keep a bag of sand or cat litter in your car, as well. If you get stuck in the snow or ice, you can sprinkle the litter behind your tires to provide additional traction so that you can get out.

Stay Safe This Winter

These tips on prepping your car for winter should help keep you safe on the road, even during extreme weather conditions.

Don’t take a chance with your safety – instead, make sure your car is properly prepared for the winter season so that you are ready for whatever weather comes your way.
